Sidux second 2007 release, Tartaros, or Τάρταρος for you Greek majors went live on May 28. From many positive reviews “Great work, devs!” to a few negatives “Tiny fonts!” sidux overall is well underway to becoming the distro that's a force to be reckoned with. Why Tartaros, and previously, Chaos for names? A simple answer from x-un-i was “It's neutral, there's enough of them, and having a set name makes it easier than deciding a new name every release” Tartaros was both a god and a place in Greek mythology. Tartaros was as far below the Earth as heaven was above. It is one of the primordial objects which sprung from Chaos, the Abyss. Along with Tartaros, Gaia (Earth), and Eros, emerged into the universe. Tartaros as a place was one of the lowest, darkest, gloomiest places of Hades, So dark that there were three kinds of night, where those condemned were guarded by beings with fifty heads and 100 arms. This is reflected in the color scheme used for the Tartaros release, thanks to the dedicated and talented art team. In this release, users familiar with the old sidux/kanotix boot will find it has been redone, and is now smoother, faster than ever. There are releases in lite and full for 32 and 64 bit systems.

ATI vs nVidia.
- Why nVidia has few problems
- Why ATI does.
Wild Chili Peppers and Spice with wirechief
I found sidux to work well on three computers here at my home, they are at the most 5 years old, and most impressively with my Sony Vaio Laptop but like most good software there is always a weakness and I found that with my grand-daughters old Dell 2600 Inspirion, I believe the problem was that the Intel 830 driver is not supported but this may need expert confirmation. I was able to demonstrate how fast sidux is with my Sony Laptop to my son and his children. They gave me loud ooh's and aah's with all the supporting software that is bundled with sidux. This prompted many questions and soon they were answered when my laptop played a DVD show n tell of my sister-in-laws garden. They were astonished at how fast our pictures downloaded from the SD memory stick and how the pictures displayed by just hovering the mouse over them, no clicking was necessary. I was able to easily configure my laptop so that it was able to connect to the internet via their wep encrypted router. It appeared as magic that the one laptop without a hard drive was able to connect to the internet and save information to the usb stick, that really impressed everyone. They are all singing the sidux song. "wild chili peppers and spice". When i got back home i was having trouble setting up my laptop to my router. The problem was the firewall/router was shut down. We had lost power for 6 min the day we left for Chicago and my linux firewall/router box went down and had to reset and turn it back on. That was all that was required the kmenu -- sidux -- net -- network-card-configuration selection did the trick. That]s cool going from one setup to another seamlessly from a system that runs wep to one that has no wep or wpa that was easy. Well done.

This seems an appropriate rant for the first newsletter, since Tartaros couldn't even offer its users fglrx support until a bit after the release, because of ATI's failure to implement support for the new Xorg numbering system, 1.3 (instead of 7.2) for xserver-xorg-core, even though this new versioning was known months ahead of time. I'd say the cause is evident in every word ATI speaks. Their development process is crap, their programmers suck, they don't do beta testing on releases, their development cycle is far too short, they don't test. What do you expect other than crap with that ? NVidia develops its drivers over a period of 6 months to 1 year. They do frequent beta releases, they do not release on a schedule, they read the forums, they visibly run linux. ATI doesn't even talk to anyone. ATI doesn't appear to have any plans on changing this anytime in the near future. They seem to in fact be proud of the fact that their entire process is designed to create shit except for people willing to kiss their collective asses like Michael from phoronix. If you are wondering why ATI stuff is shit and doesn't work, now we all know. i can only wait another month, hoping ATI is doing something in fact, what you can wait for is the following: broken drivers on kernel upgrades, broken drivers at random, failure to look 3 months into the future to the state of coming linux, With ATI's actions it's guys like pmarat and the freedesktop xorg crew that are going to save ATI users, not ATI and their shit. Meanwhile ATI xorg free gets better and better, mainly because most hackers have come to grasp that ATI is always going to suck, so if anyone wants a working driver, you need to write it yourself. Boy is the new ATI xorg driver for 7500 good. Google Earth runs perfectly on it as well as on my binary nVidia 6200 card. Can't forget to mention Intel for non gaming users, with their free xorg drivers, they are fast becoming, along with older ATI cards, the best Linux options. Some useful reading can be found in the Links section of the newsletter.
